  • Act out the story with your child using plastic or wooden figures.

Preschool: Jesus Commissions the Disciples

Preschoolers are now hearing about Christ’s Resurrection.

  • I wonder how Jesus’ friends know that this is Jesus?
  • I wonder how they feel being close to Jesus again?
  • I wonder if they will always follow Jesus even when they can’t see Him?

K-1st Grade: God Sends Help

Younger elementary children are now focusing on the Early Church.

  • I wonder how Jesus’ friends felt, huddled in that dark room? 
  • I wonder what the wind felt like that came through the room? 
  • I wonder what the flames looked like above everyone’s heads?
  • I wonder if Jesus has come to live inside you?

2nd-4th Grade: Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13, 42-47)

Older elementary students are now focusing on the Early Church.

  • I wonder what the wind felt like that came through the room? 
  • I wonder what the flames looked like above everyone’s heads?
  • I wonder why they were speaking in other languages?
  • If wonder if the Holy Spirit lives inside of you?
  • I wonder how the early church was different than the church today? I wonder how it was the same?

5th-8th Grade: Semester Review & End-of-the-Year Projects

Middle schoolers are wrapping up their year in DIG by creating special projects that reflect their growth in Christ this year. Students will share their projects at the DIG Celebration!

Catechism for Children

What is catechism?

Catechism is a question-and-response way of memorizing foundational theological truths.

Historically catechisms were written with at least three purposes. The first was to set forth a comprehensive exposition of the gospel—not only in order to explain clearly what the gospel is, but also to lay out the building blocks on which the gospel is based, such as the biblical doctrine of God, of human nature, of sin, and so forth. The second purpose was to do this exposition in such a way that the heresies, errors, and false beliefs of the time and culture were addressed and counteracted. The third and more pastoral purpose was to form a distinct people, a counter-culture that reflected the likeness of Christ not only in individual character but also in the church’s communal life. – The Gospel Coalition

For these purposes, centuries-old catechisms have been adapted in recent years to benefit today’s families.

  • I wonder how Jesus’ friends felt when he appeared to them after his resurrection?
  • I wonder what Jesus’ body was like after he rose from the dead?
  • I wonder why Jesus said, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life”?
  • I wonder how Jesus could “be with us and leave us at the same time?” (p. 324)

2nd-4th Grade: The Ascension (Acts 1:1-11)

  • What do you notice about the response of the women who found the empty tomb?
  • What do you think it was like for them to see the living Christ with their own eyes?

Found: Psalm 23 by Sally Lloyd Jones

This recently released board book uses the text of Psalm 23 from the Jesus Storybook Bible and combines it with sweet new illustrations. Kids of all ages will love it.

The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross by Carl Laferton

A great pre-Easter read, this picture book explains the problem of sin and God’s redemptive plan. Brightly illustrated, for children PreK and up.

Younger middle schoolers have finished their study through the EFCA’s Statement of Faith and will spend April focusing on Christ’s passion and resurrection.

  • Why do you think Jesus talks about his coming death with his disciples?
  • Why do you think Jesus used bread and wine to signify his life being given for the sins of the world?
  • Reflecting on today’s passage, what steps might you take to make communion a more meaningful experience between you and God? (prayer, confession, etc.)
