Back to School Book Reviews

The beginning of the school year always feels like the more natural time to celebrate a New Year: new clothes, newly sharpened pencils, new more structured schedule, new season.  With that in mind here are a couple old and new resources for both parents and kids as we head into the fall.

The Very Worried Sparrow by Meryl Doney

This classic tale with new illustrations tells the story of a young sparrow that worries about everything but learns that his Heavenly Father gives him the security he longs for.  Great for kiddos that might be feeling anxious about preschool or starting elementary school.

Going Public by David and Kelli Pritchard

I would encourage any families who are considering or are apart of the public school system to read this book.  Written by a Young Life couple who have guided their 8 children through Washington State public schools, the book offers helpful insights about how to give children a Godly foundation that will help them flourish in public schools.  I have a church copy of this book.  Email me @ jackie@befreechurch.net if you’d like to borrow it.

The Ology: Ancient Truths ever new by Marty Machowski

Coming available in October, this book is a great resource for K-6 graders for family devotions.  It is divided into 71 different truths about God and uses pictoral analogies to explain very abstract concepts.

Back to School with Seeds of Praise: Memory Verses for School year ’15-16

It’s hard to believe September is around corner, summer seems to have sped by!  The DIG leadership team and I have been busy getting classrooms and materials ready for another great year in DIG.

I’ll be doing a blog series to prepare for the fall with posts on the following topics: meeting our gardeners, new books to share with kids and parents, and what’s new in DIG classrooms.  Today I wanted to share this year’s monthly scripture memory plan.

03-SeedsOfPraise

To aid in scripture memory we will use songs from the Seeds Family Worship (SFW) cd called Seeds of Praise.  If you aren’t familiar with SFW, it is a ministry that puts scripture to music to encourage families to memorize scripture together.  The cds are very affordable (when you purchase one, they come with a duplicate cd to give away).  You can also listen to any SFW cds for free on their website http://www.seedsfamilyworship.com/ or on other music streaming services such as Spotify.  As the title suggests, Seeds of Praise features verses that focus on praising God.

To find the year’s schedule of verses and the songs they corrolate to, simply click on 15-16 memory verses to download the list.  You can also find this list on the scripture memory tab of this blog. Each month we offer copies of the current verse on the sign by your child’s classroom.

It’s going to be a great year in scripture memory!  Hope you and your family will join us!

Preschool-The Good Shepherd and the Lord’s Supper, Psalms 23, John 10, Matthew 18

DSC_0063During August, we are revisitng the story of the Good Shepherd to get to know Jesus, the Good Shepherd.  This week we connected the Good Shepherd story with the Lord’s Table (see above photo).  Here are some wonderings and children’s reflections from the lesson:

*I wonder if the sheep are happy to be at this great feast?

*I wonder if you have ever been close to the Lord’s table?

*I wonder if you have ever felt the Good Shepherd there with you?

*I wonder if you have ever heard the very words of the Good Shepherd?

Preschool-The Parable of the Great Banquet, Matthew 14: 15-24

In preschool, we finished up our summer exploration of parables.  We talked about how parables are like presents.  “They have already been given to us…And sometimes parables    seem to have lids on them.  But when you lift the lid of a parable there is something very precious inside” (Young Children and Worship, pg 156).  In them we learn about the beauty of the Kingdom of God.

*I wonder how it felt to be invited to this great feast?

*I wonder if these people have names?

*I wonder why these people came and others wouldn’t?

*I wonder how the master feels about the guests?
